A Canadian friend at Chiropractic College used to say “Remember, it’s perfect practice that makes perfect” as we headed off to rugby trainings.
The guy had played professional hockey so I thought maybe he knew a thing or two about practice.
At first I thought it was just a quirky twist on the usual “practice makes perfect” idea. But the more I thought about it the more sense it made.
Perfect Practice – What?
Basketball Legend Michael Jordan put it well… “You can shoot baskets eight hours a day, but if your technique is wrong, all you become is good at shooting the wrong way. Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything you do will rise.”
You also need to be completely focused on what you are doing. All your attention needs to be on your practice to make it perfect.
And more practice is perfect as long as you can maintain your technique and your focus.
Perfect Practice – How?
Start with easy. Professional basketball players start with easy baskets before they work their way up to jump shots and three pointers.
Break it down. Professional golfers break their swing down to the grip, stance, back-swing, follow through and timing; and often practice just one aspect at a time.
Slow it down. Tai Chi masters practice with VERY slow movements that can be sped up when completely mastered.
Visualise. If you can see it, you can do it.
Get guidance. Coaches, trainers, training partners, mirrors and video are all wonderful tools to help you.
Perfect Practice & Gentle Chiropractic
Tension, stress and pain in your body impairs your movements, your stability and your ability to learn new patterns.
Gentle Chiropractic adjustments help your body to release that tension to create more ease, balance and flexibility and allow you to learn to do new things better.
This is the reason that exercises are so much more beneficial after a period of Gentle Chiropractic care.
